My Indoor Burger Hack: Steamed Cheeseburgers

Hi Reader,

These steamed cheeseburgers first appeared in our kitchen a few years ago, and I turn to this method whenever I want a no-fuss, flavor-packed dinner. Steaming keeps the patties incredibly moist, cooks everything in a single basket (so there’s no greasy splatter on the stove), and delivers unbeatable flavor every time.

For this recipe, I form fresh patties from ground beef and season them with my favorite burger spice blend. After eight minutes under the steamer lid, I crown each patty with cheese and let it melt to gooey perfection. It’s such a simple—but brilliant—technique.

Here’s to Jack’s Lunch in Middletown, Connecticut—the humble diner that first had the bright idea of tucking square patties into a copper steaming box back in the early 1900s. They proved that great burgers don’t need a grill, just steam, ingenuity, and a whole lot of cheese.

Need a steamer basket? I love this steamer pot, which comes with a steamer basket and lid. It's perfect for everyday steaming.

I hope you enjoy these steamed cheeseburgers as much as we do. If you'd like to share it or save it for later, please pin the recipe on Pinterest.

whole rasted chicken on baking pan

Hi Reader, I've been making roast chicken for years now, and let me tell you, it took me way too long to figure out the secret to getting it right every time. You know how it goes; sometimes the skin is rubbery instead of crispy, and the meat is dry. I'd stand there, thinking, "Why can't I just make a decent roast chicken in the oven?!" Then I tried this method where you start with high heat and then turn it down, and WOW. Golden, crispy skin and juicy meat every single time. I use my baking...
